UK cement sector at risk of deindustrialisation

City AM has interviewed Executive Director at the Mineral Products Association (MPA), Dr Diana Casey, about the challenges facing UK cement makers and what’s needed to help them compete on a level playing field.

Dr Casey explained cement’s role as an essential industry which is vital to realising the government’s infrastructure ambitions and one that underpins the delivery of its Industrial Strategy. However, she highlighted the competitiveness barriers that UK producers face including high electricity prices and uneven carbon taxation.

She added that backing UK cement would support well-paid jobs across the UK and provide security of supply for major construction projects.
