MPA explains why tackling sky high electricity costs is vital
18 July 2025
The Mineral Products Association’s (MPA) Executive Director Dr Diana Casey was invited by BBC Radio 4's Today Programme to discuss the UK Government's welcome decision to consult on electricity costs compensation for energy intensive industries, as part of its Industrial Strategy.
Dr Diana Casey explained why action to tackle the UK’s high industrial electricity costs is so important: “There's no getting away from the fact that energy intensive industries like cement are absolutely fundamental to everything the UK Government is trying to achieve.”
“We're working really hard to decarbonise, and renewable electricity is part of that decarbonisation,” she continued. “[The Government] has a choice ... choose to support our domestic sectors through things like these [energy] compensation schemes and source those materials in the UK, or ... import them from overseas because they're cheaper.”
